RIP MASK

thumbnail_crop.php.jpg

MASK was one of the owners of taput, one of my sponsors. those guys have looked out for me since i got started in the UFC. my heart goes out to the friends and family of him. this is a very sad moment, mask contributed alot towards the progression of mma and gaining notoriety to many mma fighters around the world. I was very privileged to have known him.

Charles “Mask” Lewis, one of the founding members of the ultra-popular Tapout clothing brand, died in a car crash around 1 a.m. on Wednesday in Newport Beach, Calif., according to Orange County Coroner’s Office spokesman Jim Amormino.

Lewis, a star of the Versus reality TV show “Tapout,” was 45 years old.

Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident that involved his red Ferrari and a white Porsche, said Lt. Fox, of the Newport Beach Police Department. Toxicology tests on Lewis will not be available for a few weeks, said Amormino. Lewis' death will most likely be attributed to blunt force trauma and massive internal injuries, added Amormino.

A female, who was identified as Lewis’ girlfriend by friends, was ejected from the car and rushed to Western Medical Center, where she is believed to be in stable condition.

Authorities have not been able to determine who was driving the Ferrari due to the excessive damage incurred.

The accident was not depicted as a race between cars, although the two vehicles were traveling alongside one another in the same direction on the three-lane Jamboree Road.

Micah's fight in DREAM 7

DSC01113.JPG

micah lost a decision to maeda last night here in japan. I think it was a hometown decision after seeing it from the corner and then again on tv. micah beat the guy standing and on the ground. he landed the better strikes and went for all the submissions in the fight. the guy took him down(micah took himself down after having his foot hit the ropes once) and he got on top an didnt try anything. in an org. where the last two minutes of each round is supposed ot mean everything micah ended up in mount in the end of the first. and had a fully locked armbar at the end of the second. but thats the way it goes fighting a japanese fighter in japan. if micah would have been aoki and fought the same fight , he would have gotten the nod. I know this b/c imanari fought the same fight as micah did last night only with less offensive striking and got the win. oh well. it was good first time learning experience for fighting in japan, and we'll def be invited back. just sucks to be out of the tournament. Were all very proud of micah's performance and learned alot about how to fight next time. thanks to everyone for their support.

Micah Miller makes weight for DREAM 7

DSC01054.JPG

Micah made the weight and looked great at the press conference. He stated "make no mistake about it, im not here just to be here, I'm here to win this tournament and continue to establish American Top Team as the best team in the world." He seemed very composed and relaxed.

days 1 and 2 in tokyo for DREAM

DSC01038.JPG

So for the first two days here in tokyo were a bit uneventful. WE were a bit tired from the plane ride over the pacific so crashed once we landed. yesterday was nice though. the weather was crappy it was raining and cold the whole time but we managed to get out to tokyo dome city for a while and get some souvenirs and check out the Kodokan. The Kodokan is the most famous judo facility in the entire world. its where judo was created. Its quite the experience to just be inside of it. Ive also been getting some training in with my friend gabe ruediger , blake bowman, and my jiu jitsu coach marcos "parrumpinha" da matta. were over here looking out after micah for this fight. Micah's weight cut is going better than planned and seems there wont be the slightest problem making the 63kg weight. stay tuned for weigh in results later today.

ATT Teammate Mike brown retains WEC featherweight title!

brownie.cfc

way to go Mike! go ATT! courtesy of wec.tv
CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex. – Mike Brown is starting to make this look easy. For the second straight fight, the WEC kingpin steamrolled through one of the world’s top featherweights, finishing off Leonard Garcia in less than two minutes on Sunday at American Bank Center. That Brown won was not surprising. The rapid fashion in which he did it – dropping the iron-chinned Garcia with a massive right to the temple in the opening seconds and then submitting him with an arm triangle – was both stunning and breathtaking to watch.

“I’m just happy to be here,” said Brown, who won his ninth straight and improved to 21-4. “I just stuck to my game plan. I do what I do every fight. I swing for the fences every time and try to put ‘em down. I keep my hands up. I do my thing.”

Much like his previous fight with Urijah Faber, the former champ whom he dethroned, Brown simply landed a perfect punch early and then pounced when he smelled hurt. Garcia threw a wild left and Brown countered with his crushing right. As Garcia collapsed, Brown got on top of him and desperately uncorked heavy punches and elbows. When Garcia turned, Brown took his back and tried to sink in a rear naked choke. In a scramble, Brown trapped Garcia’s arm and choked him out, forcing the tap at 1:57 of round one.

Fighting to Find Peace?

Almost finishing with the armbar

courtesy of sportsbythenumbersmma.com
thanks mom!

After reading and writing a little bit about Kelly Crigger’s book, Title Shot: Into the Shark Tank of Mixed Martial Arts I have been unable to shake a portion of it out of my mind. I mentioned part of this conversation in the previous post about the book, but here is a little more of what Cole Miller said, “I’m more calm and relaxed than any other place I’ve ever been when I’m in there [the Octagon]. I’m focused. I go in there and just forget about everything.”

We all know that the Octagon reeks of adrenaline. It comes from the fans, coaches, referee, fighters, everywhere. Adrenaline pours through the arena. Yet, here’s Miller speaking as if the Octagon is a mountain stream on a summer day...peaceful.

The way Miller explains it, his journey into the eight-sided proving ground is a form of meditation. He empties his mind of all other thoughts. He becomes focused on one thing. Of course meditation is done with a purpose of aiding mental or spiritual development, contemplation, or relaxation. So should we even consider the outlandish notion that fighting, at least for some, is how they find themselves, find peace?

Triathlon Sprint season opener at Tradewinds park 2/8/09

3945059_t2.jpg

This Sunday I competed in another triathlon, 2 in one week :). there were alot more people in it this week. the distance was 1/4 mile swim, 10 mile bike, and 2.5 mile run. I finished 10th in my age group. My times have to get alot better since im turning 25 this year i got bumped up into a new , harder, age group. Anyways my time was 1:02, not bad. I had a solid run and swim. the bike is what im worst at and the course was not a straight loop like last weeks, it was a slower course with more turns in it so my bike was alot slower than i wouldve liked. all in all i enjoyed the tri much more than last weekends. the water has been so cold so my wetsuit has become my new best friend... I wish i could do another one next weekend but there won't be another one in my area until 3/1. I'm looking forward to it.

Spike TV will open the two-hour televised fight card at 9:00 p.m. with a lightweight battle between two memorable contestants from The Ultimate Fighter. Browning (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev.) is a Kentucky-native who reached the semifinals in the lightweight division for The Ultimate Fighter Season 8. He scored an impressive victory via submission over Dave Kaplan on the show’s live finale undercard in December 2008. His opponent, Cole Miller (fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla.), made a name for himself by catching Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Jorge Gurgel in a triangle choke for a submission victory at UFC 86 last July. The Augusta, Georgia native and veteran of The Ultimate Fighter Season 5 has won three of his last four fights.
